Description: This is a general discussion about the author and the publishing process of Nothing but Trouble after Midnight. Following a reading of “Chapter 1,” the students will write a short journal entry.

Description: This is a general discussion about the author and the publishing process of Nothing but Trouble after Midnight. Following a reading of “Chapter 16,” the students will discuss the elements of fiction using the chapter like a standalone short story.

Description: Students jump into the action of the novel with an active reading discussion on “Chapter 9: First Kiss,” and the talk focuses on various reading skills.

Novel Kick-Off Party

Grade Level: 8-12 

Description: What better way to kick-off a new novel than to have the author read it to your class? Following a short introduction to the novel, the author  reads and discusses the opening chapters of the book.

 

Ask-the-Author Session

Grade Level: 8-12 

Description: Following a study of the novel, students ask the author questions about the book, writing (in general), and/or the next book in the series.

Allusions

Grade Level: 9-12+ 

Description: Nothing but Trouble after Midnight is full of allusions—especially literary. The author defines allusions, discusses the various types, and extracts examples from the text.

Theme

Grade Level: 9-12+

Description: Using “Chapter 15: Rewriting History,” the author conducts an active reading to discuss the possible themes of the chapter. Using direct examples from the text, the students support their assertions for their selected theme. This activity can then be used for a short paper on theme.
